DOJ — Marshals Service / FBI deals to use Flock license-plate cameras: nothing released, told to ask the FBI and Marshals (FOIA-2026-04063)

U.S. Department of Justice — Office of Information Policy · FOIA-2026-04063 · filed Jul 16, 2026 · answered Jul 21, 2026 · sent elsewhere, nothing released

What we asked for: Any contract, memorandum of understanding, agreement, or access-and-audit policy that controls how the U.S. Marshals Service or the FBI can get into or use Flock Safety's network of automatic license-plate-reader cameras, in effect from January 1, 2024 on. We said we were not asking for general emails.

What we got: No records and no search. This office said neither it nor DOJ's top leadership offices it serves "typically maintains records on individuals" or would keep this kind of record. It said each DOJ part handles its own FOIA requests and suggested sending the request to the FBI and the Marshals Service "as the federal entities most likely to maintain the records you are seeking."

Next step: the request would have to be filed again with the FBI and the Marshals Service. The letter gives 90 days to appeal.
