Washington County Sheriff — Tyler Robinson surrender video: office says it was deleted after 14–30 days and no record of the deletion exists

Washington County Sheriff's Office — Records · filed Jul 9, 2026 (sent again Jul 12) · answered Jul 22, 2026 · video gone; emails released later for a fee

What we asked for: (1) all video from the lobby, intake, sally-port, or booking cameras at the Sheriff's Office in Hurricane, Utah, from 8:00 p.m. September 11 to 5:00 a.m. September 12, 2025 — the night Tyler Robinson turned himself in; (2) the rule for how long that video is kept; (3) any record of the video being deleted, recorded over, or not kept, including when, by whom, and any order to preserve it; and (4) all correspondence about earlier records requests for this video.

What we got: a letter, no video. On the video, it says: "There is no video of the lobby or hallways of the Patrol Building when Robinson turned himself in. The video was not clipped and exported, therefore it was deleted between 14-30 days after it was recorded. He was never at Purgatory Correctional Facility." On the keeping rule: the county has no video-retention schedule of its own and follows the Utah State Retention Schedule GRS-2021 (attached). On the deletion: "There are no records documenting the deletion, overwriting, or non retention of the video." On the earlier requests: emails with the words “Tyler Robinson and Video” would need blacking out of private details before release. Those emails were later released: see the fee letter and the email release. For the office's November 25, 2025 statement that “No videos are missing,” see Volume 4 of that release. The letter estimated that searching and blacking out those emails would take more than 4 hours; the release that followed came to 101 documents.

Fee waiver / faster processing: The July 22 letter denied the fee waiver for the emails because the search and redaction would take “significant use of staff time and resources,” estimating more than 4 hours of work and a cost over $25.

Documents are exactly as the agency provided them; only the requester's personal contact information has been blacked out. All other redactions are the agency's. Link to this record: https://records.nomergerwithoutdebate.org/grama/wcso-video-letter/
